Imagine that after irreversible natural catastrophes that North America is split into 12 district based areas. Now imagine that there is a “Capital” that rules all of them after a revolution generations ago and their way of keeping fear alive is by picking two children between the ages of 12-18 from each district and pitting them against each other in a fight to the death with only one winner coming out alive? These are the Hunger Games.
The narrator of the story is Katniss Everdeen, an independent and angry 16-year-old who has had a difficult life, much everyone in District 12. She’s been keeping her family (mother and 12-year-old sister) alive for years by illegally hunting outside of the District’s wire and electric fences…that is until her sister is chosen to be a contestant in the 74th annual Hunger Games.
Katniss is an overnight celebrity since every minute of the hunger games is viewed by all of Panem (their country). Households watch tributes being chosen, being paraded through the streets, and they also watch them brutally be murdered, starve to death, drown, and die alone in an arena crafted for maximum entertainment.
I don’t want to give any more of the book away, but, I will say that I’m hooked on another teenie series. I just paid WAY too much money for an audiobook of “Catching Fire” which I had no business buying since I had no Audible credits until October 6th. Oh well, life’s too short.
****/5 stars. It’s an easy read with an atypical love story for a 16-year-old, a political storyline with turmoil, and drama that keeps the pages turning into the wee hours!
